A programme of
Bartók Piano Concerto No 2
Stravinsky Petrushka (1947)
Tchaikovsky Francesca da Rimini
Celebrating 30 years of revelatory performances, the Philharmonia Orchestra and its powerful Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen have one of the most celebrated and fruitful relationships in the classical world. For the first of their two Festival concerts, Salonen brings a brightly coloured programme of music he has long loved and admired.
Piano sensation Lang Lang tackles the earthy folk tunes and sparkling hues of Bartók’s vibrant Second Piano Concerto. Salonen considers Stravinsky’s brilliant ballet score Petrushka, with its unforgettable melodies and dancing rhythms, to be one of the composer’s most accomplished works, and he ends the concert with the high emotion of Tchaikovsky’s passionate Francesca da Rimini.
Philharmonia Orchestra
One of the top orchestras in the UK. Since its formation in 1945 it has made thousands of recordings, as well as giving over 100 concerts per year.
