Musical Cosmopolitans
Chamber music for strings and piano by Mozart and Mendelssohn, with Piazzolla tango music.
There are many parallels between Mozart, Mendelssohn and Piazzolla – all three were child
prodigies and all three travelled widely, spending time in other countries and assimilating foreign
styles. Piazzolla, the tango composer, spent much of his childhood living in Greenwich
Village, absorbing jazz, Bach and klezmer and later studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Mozart, as a child, toured widely with his equally talented sister, taking in the very different musical
traditions of Paris, Mannheim, and Italy. Mendelssohn also enjoyed a cosmopolitan childhood, later
becoming an enthusiastic traveller, famously drawing inspiration from, amongst other places, the
landscape of the Scottish Highlands.
