Englishwoman Flora Sandes was the only western woman to enlist as a soldier in the First World War. She became a heroine and a media sensation after she was wounded fighting in the Serbian Army. Louise Miller will examine why only Flora — out of the millions of Allied women who undertook war work — was able to become a soldier.
