Explore Day: Beethoven's Missa Solemnis
Beethoven described the Missa solemnis as his “greatest work.” It was composed around the same time as his celebrated Ninth Symphony and is one of his very few religious compositions. Some might even claim that it is the greatest work by any composer.
Others, however, have been bewildered by its complexity and by the unorthodox treatment of the text. Come along to this SCO Explore Day with musicologist, composer and the editor of the Beethoven Compendium, Professor Barry Cooper (University of Manchester) to unravel the intricacies behind this dramatic work. He will be joined by SCO Chorus Director, Gregory Batsleer.
