Katya Kabanova

A New Co-Production with Theater Magdeburg.
Supported by the Alexander Gibson Circle.

Renowned British director Stephen Lawless brings his trademark theatricality to Janacek’s intense drama.

In a small industrial community, lost in the vast landscape of Russia, Katya is torn between her love of a younger man and her duty as a wife. This insightful new production brings the shattering effects of oppression and isolation to the fore as Katya is inexorably drawn towards the ever-present Volga river, and the escape it alone can offer…

Following the huge success of recent Czech opera productions – Janacek’s Jenufa (2015) and Dvorak’s Rusalka (2016) – Katya makes a long overdue return to Scottish Opera’s main Season programme. With romance, drama and an orchestral scoring that encompasses an extraordinary range of colours and textures, Janacek’s music is both heartrending and hugely uplifting. Laura Wilde, much-lauded for her Jenufa at English National Opera in 2016, sings Katya, alongside a cast including American tenor Ric Furman and Hanna Hipp (The Marriage of Figaro 2016). Distinguished mezzo Patricia Bardon is meddling mother-in-law Kabanicha. Stuart Stratford conducts.

Sung in Czech with English supertitles.
