Go back in time to the early 20th century this May half term and enjoy a fascinating glimpse of the Edwardian era just before the First World War when the Astors were in residence.

Experience an Edwardian school where old fashioned PE sessions will take place and “the Three Rs” of education – reading, writing and arithmetic – will be taught each day in an old fashioned classroom. While a fun time is promised for all, children need to mind their Ps and Qs to avoid upsetting the teacher!

Roll up! Roll up! Come and have a go at traditional fairground games from the period. Try your luck at the coconut shy, tin can alley or hoopla. Join costumed golfers with traditional clubs from the time in a golfing challenge or enjoy a more leisurely game of croquet on the lawn.

Follow a quiz though the rooms of the Castle to learn about famous Edwardians. Then listen to interviews with former ‘below stairs’ staff on old fashioned telephones and radios. Discover the Astor family’s ‘rags to riches’ story and enjoy family memorabilia in an exhibition in the Castle which brings the captivating ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ years vividly to life.

Look out for visitors arriving in full Edwardian dress as prizes for the best dressed boy and girl take place daily for those in Edwardian costume.
