How Time Flies: 1963
The “My Cool Sixties” month at Eastbourne Under Ground Theatre will soon be up and running, combining a foyer display of photographs of 60s’ rock stars, with 60s’ music LIVE at all the April coffee-mornings.
1963 was one of those momentous years that seem to mark the end of one era and the beginning of another. The UK charts at the start of the year were dominated by Cliff Richard and The Shadows – and at the end by the likes of Gerry and The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer, and, overwhelmingly, The Beatles. It was the year in which the world said “Hello” to Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, and Whitney Houston, and “Goodbye” to JFK; Edith Piaf and Aldous Huxley. It was the year, too, of the Profumo Affair and the Great Train Robbery, and of President De Gaulle saying “Non” to Britain, while millions of African Americans said “Yes” to freedom.
To take us back in time at the Under Ground, Cornflower’s Chris Liddiard, Jill Daw and Bob Shepherd will be joined by singing duo Marilyn Williams and Andy Payne, plus Jon Rose and Paul Potton. Throughout, Fairtrade coffee and tea will be on sale, along with home-made cakes – as well as tickets for future UGT events.
