Betrayal
Upfront Theatre are delighted to be returning to the Arts Centre with a modern classic written by one of the most influential British dramatists of all time.
Robert and Emma appear to the world as a successful, happily married couple. However, when friend Jerry confesses his love for Emma they embark on a seven-year love affair with little regard for their betrayal of Robert. However, as times passes, the lovers manipulate one another and with Robert slowly piecing together the situation – the audience realise that it is betrayal which underpins the actions of all three characters in this unfortunate love triangle.
Interestingly, Pinter opts to use a reverse chronology play structure so the audience begins with the end of the affair and progresses to the beginning. By doing this, the audience gets a deeper appreciation of the impact of each individual’s actions and the consequences of betrayal.
Nobel prize winner Pinter acknowledged that the play was inspired by his own affair with BBC presenter Joan Bakewell and the play is critically regarded as one of the playwright’s major dramatic works which includes 'The Caretaker', 'The Homecoming' and 'The Birthday Party.
Book early to avoid disappointment.
