Nordic Voices At Durham Cathedral
The renowned Copenhagen Bach Choir is based in St. Jacob's Church in the heart of Østerbro, Copenhagen.
Many major European cities have a Bach Choir, including Copenhagen and, of course, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Although Bach is central to how the choir originated, the Copenhagen Bach Choir does not sing Bach all the time. Their repertoire is diverse.
The programme comprises songs by many great composers, including:
Edvard Grieg - How beautiful thou art
P. E. Lange-Müller - Madonna over the waves
Anton Bruckner - Ave Maria
Max Reger - And our dear women
Rued Langgaard - The spirit of the Lord is upon me
Carl Nielsen - Let Jesus my heart receive
C. Hubert H. Parry - My soul there is a country
Knud Jeppesen - He has founded a city
Bjørn Hjelmborg - How beloved are your homes
Heinrich Schütz - Grant us peace
Vagn Holmboe - A Lyke-Wake Dirge
Heinrich Schütz - They that sow in tears shall reap in joy
Johannes Brahms - Why is light given to the weary
The young and ambitious Conductor, Jan Scheerer, leads the choir. He was (as one of ten in the world) an active participant in the 'Eric Ericson International Master Class on Choral and Orchestral Conducting' in Lund, and was the assistant conductor at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen.
Jan won the third international 'Mariele Ventre' competition in Bologna. Engagements that followed include being choirmaster and assisting conductor at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and at the Gothenburg Symphonic Orchestra. He has been responsible for choir conducting teaching at the Royal Music Academy in Copenhagen since August 2015.
