Spring Concert

Elgar - Cockaigne Overture.
Grieg - Piano Concerto.
Prokofiev - Symphony Number 6.

In its 15 minutes or so the Cockaigne overture gives a lively and colourful musical portrait of Edwardian London. The work ends in a characteristically Elgarian blaze of orchestral sound, Elgar's piece is a splendidly evocative picture of London at this time.

The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, composed by Edvard Grieg in 1868, was the only Concerto Grieg completed. It is one of his most popular works and among the most popular of all. Here it is performed by renowned international soloist Fali Pavri.

Prokofiev's fifth symphony was premiered on January 13, 1945 in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory by the USSR State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Prokofiev himself. The premiere was very well received, and the symphony has remained one of the composer's most popular works.

Fali Pavri - Piano.
Robert Dick - Conductor.
