Schubert 1824
A programme of
SCHUBERT Arpeggione Sonata, D821
DESYATNIKOV Wie Der Alte Leiermann
SCHUBERT Quartet No 14 in Dm ‘Death and the Maiden’, D810
Schubert was never less than prodigiously productive, but 1824 was exceptional by any standards as the two pieces here amply demonstrate. Death and the Maiden commands especial respect for its sheer originality, scale and drama; it feels like a symphony for quartet – there had been no piece like it ever before. Leonid Desyatnikov pays tribute to Schubert by drawing inspiration from the chilling final song of Winterreise to create his almost cinematically atmospheric piece for viola.
