Carmen - Fire and Fate

They say that the spirit of a gypsy never dies. The life force is so strong that it continues past the moment of the last heartbeat, past the final breath.

For Carmen, perhaps the most famous gypsy of all, this is undeniably true. She certainly lives in Bizet’s masterpiece, one of the most beloved operas in the world. Now Kirstin Chávez, one of opera’s most beguiling mezzos, who has made the role of Carmen her own throughout the world, is exploring the character and enigma of Carmen in depth by presenting the story entirely from Carmen’s perspective.

This new production is specially devised by Kirstin Chávez in collaboration with Artistic Director Johnathon Pape. Kirstin delivers Bizet’s timeless music in her dusky mezzo and also tells Carmen’s story through the language of flamenco, choreographed by the Buenos Aires-born flamenco dancer Sol Koeraus, ‘La Argentinita’.

Kirstin sings in the original French with dialogue in English. She is accompanied on the piano by her long-standing collaborator, Paolo André Gualdi. In June 2016 Kirstin gave her London debut solo recital with Paolo at Cadogan Hall and is delighted to be returning to the UK following on from performances of Carmen with Welsh National Opera and of the Marquise de Merteuil in Luca Francesconi’s Quartett at the Royal Opera House.
