Luba Tunnicliffe, Hannah Watson

Luba Tunnicliffe (viola) and Hannah Watson (piano) perform a programme exploring very different writing for viola and piano, from the expansive and dramatic Rebecca Clarke Sonata to Schumann’s intimate and enigmatic Märchenbilder (fairy tale pictures).

Edwin Roxburgh’s Ricercare, premiered in 2012, uses the icier higher register and harmonics of the viola to virtuosic effect in a single movement which barely pauses for breath as it spins and dances to its conclusion.

Luba and Hannah have been playing together since 2014, and have performed at St John’s Smith Square as part of the Park Lane Group series, given a preconcert recital at the Royal Festival Hall through the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, and appeared on Radio 3’s In Tune.
