Writing from Antique Letters

Even in a world of emails and texts, there’s something about a handwritten letter that still appeals. Letters are tactile, you could be looking over the shoulder of the writer as they put pen to paper. In this drop-in session we will be reading letters written over a century ago, and creating stories from what we find, or perhaps from what’s hidden between the lines. Bring your imagination, find the story, and write it in whatever way you choose.

Marilyn Messenger is a graduate of Cumbria University’s Creative Writing Course, a member of the Facets of Fiction writers’ workshops. Her stories have been published in magazines and anthologies, read at events such as the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival, and performed by Liar’s League in New York. An extract from her work, Man of Stars, based on the letters of a 19th century astronomer, was published in the Unbound Press Anthology, Loose Leaves. Recently in print is, Ambiguous Encounters: ten short stories, written in collaboration with fellow Cumbrian author, Brindley Hallam Dennis.
