The first international orchestra to visit The Sands Centre this season is one of Russia's finest, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra.

The programme starts with Vaughan Williams' ethereal Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis - a fascinating opportunity to hear a Russian orchestra play this great Vaughan Williams work. The brilliant young Russian virtuoso pianist Pavel Kolesnikov will join the orchestra in a performance of Tchaikovsky's epic Piano Concerto No.1.

In the second half the orchestra will play Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6, known as the Pathetique. Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance of this great work only 10 days before his mysterious death. Since that first performance this symphony has been regarded by many critics as one of the greatest symphonies ever written.
