Russia 17

World renowned pianist Peter Donohoe takes us on a journey of eighty years of virtuoso Russian music in a programme juxtaposing the brooding expressivity of Scriabin and Rachmaninov with the acerbic yet lyrical Stravinsky, the burning fervour of Prokofiev and more contemplative Shostakovich before culminating with Mussorgsky’s gargantuan Pictures at an Exhibition. From his unprecedented success at the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, Peter Donohoe has become recognised not only as one of the great pianists of our time, but also one of the leading exponents of music by Russian composers, his recordings of Rachmaninov, the complete Scriabin and Prokofiev Sonatas, as well as many works by Shostakovich and Stravinsky, achieving international acclaim.
