Jon Sterckx - Tabla Solo
One of the most distinctive sounds of the Indian Subcontinent is that of the Tabla - the small pair of drums with an amazing range of tones from the high bell-like treble to the deep pitch bending bass.
Tabla are used in many of the musical forms played in Northern India, Pakistan, Nepal & Bangladesh - from Hindustani music (North Indian Classical) to folk music, pop music, film music and in devotional music like Bhajan and Kirtan and in Ghazal and Qawaali.
In this tabla solo performance, Jon will play a range of material from different traditions of tabla playing - (known as Gharanas, or Households) with ancient tabla compositions passed down over generations as well as some of Jon’s own rhythmic compositions inspired by the tabla tradition.
Jon learned tabla in India & in UK and has been playing for 30+ years. He has performed twice at the globally renowned TED events, and at WOMAD Festival, London International Festival and most of the UK’s major Melas. to name a few. This will be Jon’s 5th appearance at Cardiff Mela.

A versatile and innovative percussionist, Jon has worked across a wide range of musical styles, from traditional musical forms to contemporary experimental styles, theatre and dance collaborations, live percussion sampling (live looping) and fusion collaborations.
Performances include: 2 performances at TED events, WOMAD, Cadogan Hall, London International Arts Festival, Llangollen International Eisteddfod, 3 Choirs Festival, Beautiful Days Festival, Larmer Tree Festival, Musicport, Drum Camp, Tribe of Doris, Kaya Festival, Cardiff Mela, Glasgow Mela, Belfast Mela.

Jon is also an experienced educator and teaches tabla & percussion, runs weekly tabla classes in Swindon & delivers workshops to schools & colleges and for educational organisations.
