Auguste Rodin and Gaudier-Brzeska's Dancers

Dr Jenny Powell will discuss the French sculptors Auguste Rodin and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s shared passion for the subject of dance.

In 1910, Gaudier declared that Rodin was the ‘greatest sculptor’, but both artists engaged with new and more athletic forms of dance in their works, pushing forward the boundaries of sculpture through this subject. Jenny has published widely on modern sculpture in The Sculpture Journal, and in exhibition catalogues such as Schwitters in Britain (Tate), Modern British Sculpture (RA) and Sculpture Victorious (Yale). Dr Jenny Powell is the curator of New Rhythms Henri Gaudier-Brzeska: Art, Dance and Movement 1911–1915, which includes some of Rodin’s dancers.
