Ambrose Ashley, a wealthy landowner, is wintering in Italy when he meets Rachel, a distant relation, and everything changes…
At home his young ward Philip is surprised to receive letters from Ambrose telling him he has married Rachel, and even more surprised when he arrives in Florence to find that Ambrose has died suddenly, and his widow has disappeared.
Philip is convinced that Rachel is responsible. But when they meet in Cornwall, Philip becomes besotted with her beauty and seduced by her charms. He is torn between believing that Rachel is a murderess, or that she is a maligned victim of rumour and suspicion.
Helen George (Call the Midwife) plays the deliciously enigmatic Rachel. This menacing psychological thriller enthralled readers when it was first published in 1951, becoming an international best seller and twice being made into successful films.
