‘What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord?'

The year is 1800, Napoleonic wars, the ruling family are fleeing their country as impending military invasion looms on the horizon. Necessity forces these characters of stature onto the claustrophobic ignoble settings of an old galleon ship; isolated, at war, surrounded only by the vast, maddening sea.

After its European tour, Cambridge's European Theatre Group present Shakespeare's Hamlet, severed from its courtly aesthetic, is reimagined amongst the grit and shingle of the 18th century sea. The royals must shake off their pomp and stateliness to sustain themselves in a time of political commotion. With intrepid setting, bloody camaraderie and physical spectacle comes this marauding take on the Bard's most potent work.
