Werther By Massenet

Rarely in opera is the destructive power of forbidden love felt so close to the bone. Based on the 1774 novel that made Goethe a literary superstar, Werther transcends the concept of the domestic drama into something far more evocative and powerful.

A passionate and over-sensitive young artist falls for the daughter of a local magistrate who is engaged to another man. Unable to control his passion, he pursues his love against all odds, putting at risk the innocence of a young family.

Iain Farrington’s new arrangement for salon ensemble brings the musicians on stage with the singers, creating an intimacy that promises to bring out the drama in this most powerful of love stories.
