Silent Comedy - A Century Ago Film Screenings
Relive what it was like at the ‘flickers’ exactly a century ago with this silent comedy double bill from 1916 featuring two of the era’s biggest stars: Douglas Fairbanks Junior and Charlie Chaplin.
The programme opens with The Matrimaniac (Dir: Paul Powell US 1916 44mins), a perfect early showcase for Fairbanks’s charm, comedy timing and athleticism. This will be followed by The Count (Dir: Charles Chaplin US 1916 24mins) made when Charlie was with the Mutual studios, a time he later described as his happiest in filmmaking. With live piano accompaniment by John Sweeney.
