Acid King

Bathed in distortion, baptized in a plume of smoke, and born again in 2015, Bay Area trio Acid King—Lori S. [vocals, guitars], Joey Osborne [drums], and Mark Lamb [bass]—re-emerged with their first offering in a decade, Middle of Nowhere Center of Everywhere. Tastemakers such as Noisey, Blabbermouth, Invisible Oranges, Ultimate Guitar, and New Noise lauded the album. They embarked on tours of the States and Australia, appearing on festivals including Psycho Las Vegas, Erosion Fest, Desert Generator, and more as well as sharing the stage with everyone from Sleep and Down to Blue Öyster Cult and Red Fang. It extended a celebrated discography that encompasses three EPs and three full-lengths, namely Zoroaster [1995], Busse Woods [1999], and Acid King III [2005]. It’s no surprise strains of their style infect luminaries such as The Sword and Kylesa, and they’ve earned a place in tomes like The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal and the A to Z of Doom, Gothic & Stoner Metal.

Forever etched in the Acid King Necronomicon, Joey and Mark announced an amicable split during late 2016. Kicking off the new year, Lori invited an old friend Black Cobra’s Rafa Martinez [bass] and avowed Acid King fan Bil Bowman of Hornss behind the kit for a string of shows in 2017.

Alunah
www.alunah.co.uk

Since first coming together in the English Midlands in 2006, Alunah have trafficked in a blend of the earthly and the unearthly.

Over the course of their four albums – 2010’s Call of Avernus, 2012’s White Hoarhound, 2014’s Awakening The Forest and 2017's Solennial – the four-piece have been a constant force of progression into an individualized take on psychedelic and organic heft. Their material has never lacked structure or groove, but with the melodic vocals of guitarist Sophie Day ever at the fore, they keep an eye toward the ethereal as well. That was never more true than on Awakening the Forest, which was released by Napalm Records and followed by 2015 CD reissues of the first two albums via PRC Music and a vinyl release for Call of Avernus through UK imprint HeviSike Records.

As they always do, Alunah are moving forward. Sophie, guitarist David Day, bassist Daniel Burchmore and drummer Jake Mason signed to Svart Records for the March 2017 release of their fourth album, Solennial, and recorded with Chris Fielding (Conan) at Skyhammer Studio, also owned by Conan’s Jon Davis.

Following in the footsteps of Svart alums Hexvessel and Jess and the Ancient Ones, Alunah arrive at the label preceded by a reputation for blending nature worship and heavy vibes with a grace that few can match, basking in a sun-soaked spirit of beauty and decay, folklore and deeply personal expression. Look for them to expand their sonic palette with the new material and build on what they’ve accomplished before in their rich, engaging sound that seems to be always wandering and never, ever lost.

"They play heavy music rooted in the tradition of Saint Vitus, but the focus isn’t so much on brute force but grace" (Decibal Magazine)

"A sure-fire sign that Alunah have the potential to exist amongst the greats"
- Rock-A-Rolla Magazine

"Signing to a major label has obviously given the four-piece clarity and this is their most mature release to date" - Terrorizer Magazine

"Day's vocals lead the band's charge with a regal charisma, while the songwriting is refreshingly old-school" - Zero Tolerance Magazine

Monolithian
www.monolithiandoom.bandcamp.com

2-piece doom/black metal band from Falmouth.

Formed in 2010, Simon Walker and Shannon Green have spent the last few years tirelessly pounding the miles, travelling to all corners of the UK to smash their way through gargantuan sets of ravenous death-sludge attack. Filth spews from this hound like an unstoppable demonic force, but that's not to say that it's not dynamically astute… on the contrary, the ebbs and flows of the mid-paced minimalist doomy sections tie together with arching build ups and fiendishly heavy metallic destruction.

With a fistful of splits and EPs under their belt, Monolithian gave us their debut full length in 2015, the self-destructively titled “The Finest Day I Ever Lived, Was When Tomorrow Never Came”, and it manifested itself as a rounded progression to cement the band as one to pay attention to even further on the UK underground circuit. A more fully realised version of its predecessors, the album is still raw and bitter, but with a maturity of experimentation within the sound and song structure to match the subjective nihilism.

Live, Monolithian are a band that simply take your head clean off and leave you wondering how the sound from just 2 souls can be so destructively heavy.
