Drawing On: The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contempory Art

Spring marks a celebration of drawing at the RWA with Drawing On… turning the spotlight on Modern British Art, showcasing over fifty-five works from The Ingram Collection. Presented across two galleries, it features works by Edward Burra, Cecil Collins, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Mary Fedden PPRWA, Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Keith Vaughan, Henry Moore, John Nash, Ceri Richards and Stanley Spencer, amongst many more.

The definition of drawing has, like taste, evolved over time and this captivating selection of works from the Ingram Collection represents the development of various narratives in drawing and Modern British Art. The work selected covers a wide range of techniques and styles, considering drawing in its widest possible sense, including sculptural studies, figurative sketches and coloured landscapes, some highly worked, others scribbled and fragmented. Drawing On… creates signposts suggesting the influence of 20th century work on current practice, seen in the accompanying exhibition Drawn.

Over the past decade, entrepreneur and investor Chris Ingram has created what is now recognised as the biggest privately owned publicly accessible collection of Modern British and Contemporary art. The Ingram Collection comprises 650 works of art of which 500 are by the most important artists of the Modern British era, amongst these Edward Burra, Lynn Chadwick, Elisabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth and Eduardo Paolozzi.

Through an on-going programme of loans to exhibitions, galleries and museums, Chris Ingram ensures wide public access to the Collection. The Collection is used for displays and exhibitions at The Lightbox, the award-winning gallery and museum in Chris’ hometown of Woking and national and international loans. It is this commitment to make The Ingram Collection widely available that has earned Chris Ingram deserved acclaim as “one of the most active and thoughtful collectors of Modern British Art today.” (Stephen Deuchar CBE, Director, The Art Fund).

The RWA would like to thank the generosity of Chris Ingram and The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art for their invaluable support and loan of artwork.
