Confusions
Written in 1974, and premiered in London in 1976 at the Apollo Theatre - with Derek Fowlds, John Alderton, Pauline Collins, Sheila Gish and James Cossins.
Confusions is a collection of five, short interlinked but self contained plays with 3 to 5 male and female characters in each. Each play deals riotously, but with sharply pointed undertones, with human eccentricities and the human dilemma of loneliness: a mother unable to escape from baby talk, a disastrous fete, an unsuccessful seduction attempt, a fate-fraught dinner encounter - the final play sums up with five self-immolated characters on park benches. All deal with human loneliness and hypocrisy in styles ranging from comic naturalism to high farce.
