Coalesce fables of damaged hearts told by the Shangri-Las with the pomp of '70s Queen. Add the cinematic despair of Portishead with just an echo of Kate Bush and you are as close as this humble scribe can get to defining Call Me Jolene.
What elevates CMJ, other than the craft and ambition of their songwriting, is the bite delivered by rouged lips. "Keen teeth may lurk where soft lips lie". The Homeric orchestration and smoky performance veil an ardent feminism and lyrical voice reminiscent of a drunken Dorothy Parker berating all from atop the round table at The Algolquin.
