Love And Loss

Programme:
Dvorak - Cello Concerto
Sibelius - Symphony No. 2

Joshua Weilerstein - conductor
Leonard Elschenbroich - cello

Some listeners think of it as a mighty river of sound; others as the song of a great nation awakening to freedom. But however you hear it, there are few experiences in classical music more invigorating than Sibelius’s Second Symphony, a musical journey that begins amidst the sounds of nature and ends in a surge of triumph. It’s an inspirational climax to an evening that opens with Dvorak’s Cello Concerto – a sweeping, bittersweet song of love and loss from the New World, played tonight by Leonard Elschenbroich, a cellist who’s been praised for his ‘gripping and impassioned’ performances.
