The three pieces in the first half of this concert are linked by the musical concept of fugue: fugues by Bach and Mendelssohn are followed by Alexander Zemlinsky's Quartet No. 4 from 1936, a stunning but neglected work which features a dynamic fugue as its conclusion.
After the interval the Brodskys present one of the great masterworks of chamber music, Schubert's powerful Death And The Maiden.
