Sunstroke

With daily reports of holiday plans being disrupted by political and global events, Bold Text Playwrights return to Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Monday September 7th with eight tales of British tourists caught up in events beyond their control. In a series of micro-plays, a succession of ordinary holiday-makers reflect on the unfolding chaos around them and their place in an increasingly frightening and uncertain world.

“From the crisis at Calais, to migrant routes through some of the Med’s popular holiday spots and, of course, the ever-present threat of terrorism, our right to a fortnight in the sun is fast becoming an ethical and political minefield,” comments BBC Archers writer Tim Stimpson, who is curating the evening. “How are we all supposed to react to catastrophic global events? And what responsibility do we bear when all we want is a couple of weeks away?”

‘Sunstroke’ is directed by Jessica Dromgoole, the award-winning producer of ‘Home Front’ for BBC Radio 4 and former Artistic Director of the Finborough Theatre. The evening, part of The Rep’s on-going Open Door season, consists eight new plays by Stephen Jackson, Liz John, Nicola Jones, Helen Kelly, Sayan Kent, Vanessa Oakes, Tim Stimpson and Julia Wright.
