The Child Who Said No

Every person's mental health recovery tells the stories of a lifetime.
Every story tells a thousand dreams.
Every dream permeates each reality.

The play is a journey of life, grief, hope, change and the human condition. The audience steps through the mirror to travel with these characters as companions to share their paths, reflect on their mistakes, their joys and search for their hidden truth, to discover something unseen about themselves.

The Child Who Said No is a spoken word play developed as part of raising awareness of mental health, the recovery journey and building resilience through arts and self expression.

The story follows Alice and Elizabeth in their search for truth, normality and resolution. The script includes dark moments, comedy and a sublime innocence.

The play is a theatrical spoken word piece combining film, performance art and spoken word poetry. Influenced by iconic pieces such as "Alice through the looking glass", "Peter Pan" and "The Wizard Of Oz", the play asks the question - What is my Truth? Would life be different if we asked ourselves the right questions and can this understanding of self recover our mental Health?

Alice is joined by Elizabeth on a journey of recovery that includes a trip to the unknown depths of the mind, to face their fears and a leap of faith through the mirror in search of re-mewed life.

The play explores loss and grief, the ego, recovery, failure, kindness and importantly seeing Truth by facing yourself in the mirror without a mask or facade.

The play offers the audience an emotional journey with the sadness and joy that are real in our everyday lives and concepts to consider as part of society being mentally well.

It challenges stigma and labels, and pushes an audience to consider their own mental wellbeing.

This is a dramatic, sensitive, energetic and touching spoken word piece to educate about mental health based on real experiences of the playwrights.
