Caucasian Chalk Circle
This masterpiece by Brecht contains action, music, drama and plenty of humour. It entertains whilst posing some fundamental questions.
In the aftermath of a violent civil war, the people of a village in Grusinia put on a play. Although an ancient fable its themes prove surprisingly relevant to the modern world.
Brecht’s play within a play tells two stories. First, there is the tale of Grusha, a peasant girl who rescues a rich baby during a violent revolution. Threatened by pursuing soldiers and the prejudice of others, Grusha escapes to reach a kind of safety in the remote mountains. But the child’s natural mother returns.
Then there is the story of Azdak. A peasant who, becoming a judge almost by accident, sets about enforcing his own very unusual interpretation of justice.
The two stories finally combine when Azdak has to decide the fate of Grusha and the child.
Using Alistair Beaton’s modern-day translation, this is an ensemble production making full use of Next Stage’s considerable company strengths.
