Racing Demon

David Hare’s richly intelligent, funny and gripping drama received all four major Best Play Awards when it opened at the National Theatre in 1990 and has since been a hit all over the world.

Four clergymen seek to make sense of their mission in inner-city London whilst facing their own personal crises. David Haig plays Lionel Espy, a cleric whose faith is wavering as his parishioners dwindle; there’s tabloid-hounded gay vicar Harry Henderson; ‘Streaky’ Bacon, a genial reverend with a taste for tequila, and a charismatic young curate, Tony Ferris whose arrival is set to fan the ames, whilst his sexual relationship with his lover turns to ash. The day of judgement is at hand for all.

David Hare is one of the UK’s foremost playwrights and screenwriters. His award-winning plays include Plenty, Skylight, Amy’s View and The Judas Kiss and he received Academy Award nominations for his adaptations of The Hours and The Reader. Racing Demon is one of David Hare's celebrated trilogy which examines three British institutions: Murmuring Judges takes on the judiciary, The Absence of War looks at the Labour Party and Racing Demon tackles the role of the clergy and the church’s place in modern Britain.

Olivier Award winner David Haig’s towering performances in The Madness of George III in 2011 and King Lear in 2013 have been amongst the most memorable seen in Bath in recent years. His range of recent credits also includes Guys and Dolls, Mary Poppins and Donkey’s Years, performances which all received Olivier Award nominations.

David Haig
