Beethoven's Ninth Symphony crosses an immense musical and emotional span in its four movements, ending with a jubilant vision of mankind linked in universal brotherhood. One of the choral masterpieces of the early twentieth century, Szymanowski's Stabat Mater fuses exquisite lyricism with a simplicity derived from the composer's study of Polish folk song.
