Conductor Christoph Koenig joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and rising international soloist Jamie Walton. The programme opens with two pieces inspired by the First World War. Ravel’s unusually light-hearted piece Le Tombeau de Couperin, about friends lost during the war, contrasts with the contemplative and elegiac tone of Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

The programme culminates in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. Contrary to his own beliefs that this Symphony marked the beginning of his creative decline, its string of unforgettable melodies, breathtaking emotional power and sense of gloriousness has made it his most popular.
