Aldeburgh Festival: Les Illuminations: Britten Sinfonia
Tippett - Fantasia Concertante on a theme of Corelli
Judith Weir - I give you the end of a golden string (world premiere*)
Britten - Les Illuminations
Britten orch. Colin Matthews - Three Songs for Les Illuminations
Bartók - Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste
In Britten’s Rimbaud songs the sensuality of the texts is matched in agile, feverish music for strings which trembles, shimmers and seduces. The French soprano Sandrine Piau, who premiered Colin Matthews’ completion of Britten’s three additional Rimbaud songs, makes her Aldeburgh debut.
Judith Weir, citing Tippett’s work as a model, sets a small group of soloists against a larger body of strings in the style of a baroque concerto grosso. Bartok’s masterpiece weaves its magic from threads of folk music, sprightly dance rhythms and a compelling ‘night music’ episode that conjures an atmosphere of fantasy and dreams.
Britten Sinfonia is one of the world's most celebrated and pioneering ensembles. The orchestra is an Associate Ensemble at the Barbican, has residencies in Norwich, Cambridge and Brighton, and a chamber series at Wigmore Hall. Britten Sinfonia enjoys a growing international profile, and is frequently heard on disc, BBC Radio 3 and commercial radio.
'But as always with this orchestra there was more to savour than just stellar performance. The programme was ingeniously shaped' (Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph)
'The playing was marked by the kind of luminous and infectious beauty that only comes from a true marriage of mastery and love' (The Times0
'The UK's most consistently dynamic chamber ensemble' (The New Statesman).
