Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony
Programme:
Debussy - Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune
Mozart - Piano Concerto No.9, K.271 ‘Jeunehomme’
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.6 (Pathétique)
Arthur Jussen - piano
Martyn Brabbins - conductor
It was the composer’s brother who suggested the name for Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, and he told it like it is: 'Pathétique' simply means 'full of feeling'. And amidst all the myths and mysteries that surround the writing of Tchaikovsky’s final masterpiece, one thing’s clear: the melodic inspiration and emotional honesty of this glorious (but heartbreaking) music.
Martyn Brabbins opens the concert in an altogether more languid world of Debussy’s Prélude à l’aprèsmidi d’un faune, and in between, there’s beauty, clarity and timeless grace in the fi rst really great piano concerto by Mozart, featuring a soloist who’s only slightly older than the composer was when he wrote it, Arthur Jussen.
