New To Q Sessions: Funeral Party + Kid Adrift + Liz Lawrence
The New To Q Sessions 2011 aim to showcase the best emerging acts, as chosen by Q Magazine.

East LA based disco/punk band. The nucleus of the band, Chad, plus guitarist James Torres and bassist Kimo Kauhola, (they're now a five-piece, with keyboardist Tim Madrid and a new drummer) were high school friends, who drifted into the Whittier backyard scene after leaving school. Basically, with little money about, and with nowhere to spend it anyway, locals began having parties in their backyards, and bands naturally began to form to play them. Word spread fast about the band mainly due to the mania of their live shows, but also to the way they quickly transcended the hardcore and metal on the scene. They write catchy, dance songs which touch on influences like The Cure, At The Drive In, and even The Human League.

Iain Campbell, aka bedroom wizard Kid Adrift from Clackmannanshire, Scotland, was raised on a diet of electro, dubstep, Muse and Nine Inch Nails to full on pop songs. Not surprisingly, given these disparate influences, the noise that he found himself making was a fairly unique one. A record deal was swiftly inked with Island Records for 2010's ‘Oxytocin’ EP, which veers from the guitar-heavy likes of the title track to maniacally-paced arpeggiated synths. It is a powerful, strange, direct, otherworldly statement of intent. In live performance, the line up is now settled as a four piece, with a live drummer, two keyboard players and Iain free to concentrate on playing the guitar and playing the star.

Ever since Liz Lawrence discovered the guitar she was determined to make acoustic music an exciting, fresh and honest genre. Playing in punk and ska bands as a guitarist in her early teens, she finally managed to take the mic and found herself entranced and engaged in a full blown love affair with live performance. Liz's punk history may not be obvious on first impressions but once she starts to march on the stage her fiery and precocious nature cannot be suppressed. n organic songtress able to grab an unsuspecting crowd in the palm of her hand with only an acoustic guitar as her accomplice.
