About the show
Family Show - Tales of Beatrix Potter; The Royal Ballet (1971) – 6pm
Tales of Beatrix Potter was originally choreographed by Ashton for a 1971 film. Bringing to life the imagery and characters of Beatrix Potter’s classic children’s books, it has detailed designs by Christine Edzard, with full-head animal masks by Rostislav Doboujinsky—and combines classical technique, mime and character dance to portray beloved figures such as Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (originally danced by Ashton himself), Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Its score – arranged by John Lanchbery in close collaboration with Ashton – draws on Victorian and Edwardian musical idioms to evoke the period charm of the stories. Capturing the physical quirks and personalities of each creature, the ballet’s stylised, affectionate interpretation of Potter’s world remains quietly enduring in its appeal to successive generations of audiences.
