About the show
Upon a Winter’s Night brings together festive music from many traditions and centuries.
Medieval carols and familiar Christmas melodies sit alongside baroque masterpieces and contemporary meditations, creating a programme rich in atmosphere and contrast.
Debussy’s Footprints in the Snow and Bach’s Prelude offer moments of quiet winter stillness, while Corelli’s Christmas Concerto brings warmth and seasonal brilliance. Traditional songs and wassails mingle with folk-inspired improvisations and original compositions, weaving together old and new in a gathering that captures the spirit, mystery and quiet joy of the season.

Orchestra of the Swan is rooted in the landscape and heritage of Warwickshire, but its work takes it all over the country, from village halls and churches to the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank, Wilton’s Music Hall and even Stonehenge.
The orchestra explores the English imagination in all its richness and diversity, while always looking far beyond it. It’s not unusual to hear Purcell, Elgar or Britten alongside Nick Drake, The Smiths or Radiohead. Programmes draw on music from across the centuries and across the world, finding unexpected connections along the way.
Orchestra of the Swan doesn’t just perform music. It reshapes and reimagines it, creates new work of its own, and collaborates with actors, writers, poets, visual artists, sound and lighting designers, and musicians from folk, jazz and popular music. At the heart of its work is a belief that the idea of an orchestra is still evolving.
That spirit runs through everything the orchestra does. Its recordings have now been streamed more than 18 million times, its Words & Music productions tour nationally, and its work increasingly encompasses film, immersive installations and new artistic experiences. Orchestra of the Swan is as likely to be heard on BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio 4 as on Radio 3.
