Rik Mayall first came to prominence in BBC TV's anarchic comedy 'The Young Ones', which he co-wrote with Ben Elton and Lise Mayer. This, together with 'The Comic Strip', which he also co-wrote and starred in with an array of now well-established household names, firmly established so-called 'alternative' comedy on mainstream British television.

Arguably, Rik's strongest creation, aside from Rick in 'The Young Ones' was Alan B'stard, the conniving, far right wing Tory MP in ITV's 'The New Statesman'. All of his performances, however, tended to be imbued with a characteristic physical, almost violent style, which he also employed on stage and the large screen. The comedian and actor passed away in June 2014.
