In the summer of 2007 former pupils of The Durham County Youth Big Band decided to meet once a month to play music that they had enjoyed as students and so the Durham Alumni Big Band was formed.
Today the band continues its connection with the award winning DCYBB (est. 1996) and former students and associated members, many of which have developed their musical skills at conservatoires and universities in the UK make up the personnel under the leadership of Shaune Eland.
In March 2012, the band was placed 3rd out of 15 at the Sunderland Great North Big Band festival with the adjudicators commenting on the abundance of ‘fantastic’ jazz soloists in the band. Repertoire is taken from the wide range of big bands such as Count Basie, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, and Buddy Rich but the band is also comfortable playing the contemporary big band music of Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland.
Durham Alumni Big Band tour dates listed on Ents24.com since Jan 2013.
