Born out of saxophonist Tony Kofi and pianist Alex Webb’s shared love of Duke Ellington, The Pocket Ellington manages what ought to be impossible – creating a classic Ellingtonian sound with just four horns and a rhythm section.

Great compositions from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s - Main Stem, Rain Check, Cotton Tail, Chelsea Bridge, Such Sweet Thunder and others - are presented in clever new arrangements by pianist Alex Webb, which evoke the period but also offer solo space to these top-flight musicians. The repertoire also includes pieces from artists and arrangers who were influenced by Duke – Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and Gil Evans. It’s a big sound from a pocket band featuring the highly regarded saxophonist and clarinettist, Alan Barnes, who is known for his versatility and skill across multiple reed instruments. An active performer, recording artist, and arranger in the jazz scene, blending traditional and modern jazz styles.

Prominent British jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi has gained recognition for his powerful playing and contribution to hard bop and contemporary jazz. A former member of the Jazz Warriors, he has collaborated widely in the jazz world as well as heading various solo projects. Simon Finch on trumpet and David Lalljee on trombone fill out the horn section, with veteran bassist Dave Green and powerhouse drummer Alfonso Vitale providing the swing.
"It's called 'The Pocket Ellington', but there is nothing about this band that is small. A big sound and some really high-quality arrangements wowed the audience"-
