About the show

Martin Taylor - Stories & Strings

Martin Taylor MBE has spent more than fifty years making the acoustic guitar do things most musicians consider impossible. Playing entirely solo, he conjures melody, harmony and bass simultaneously, the instrument sounding at times like a full ensemble reduced to six strings and two hands.

Martin Taylor's 'Stories & Strings' brings together the music and the stories behind it. Taylor is as compelling a raconteur as he is a guitarist, drawing on a career that has taken him from jazz clubs and festivals to theatres and concert halls across the world. Along the way he has performed with Stéphane Grappelli, Jeff Beck, Bill Wyman, Jamie Cullum and Yehudi Menuhin, among others whose names are woven into musical history.

The anecdotes arrive between pieces with the ease of someone who has genuinely lived the life he's describing.

Warm, funny and technically breathtaking in equal measure, Stories & Strings is an evening in the company of one of the instrument's great masters, at the height of his powers.

Featuring - Martin Taylor

Martin Taylor appearing at this event

Multi award-winning virtuoso guitarist, and Britain's best-selling jazz recording artist. His dazzling technique enables him to play a wide range of styles from Django-esque single note runs to pianistic, chord-and-bass line solos. He describes himself as a guitarist who plays jazz rather than a jazz musician whose chosen instrument is the guitar.
