About the show

Finchley Symphony Orchestra and conductor Christopher Stark will present a varied international programme for their March concert.

Opening with Faure’s serene ‘Pavane’ the programme then features the Violin Concerto No.1 by the African-American Florence Price. This expansive and tuneful piece was lost for decades before being rediscovered in 2009. Our soloist will be Jordan Brooks, the brilliant young violinist who made such an impression playing the Coleridge Taylor concerto with us last season.

Sam Thackray, who plays trumpet in the orchestra, describes his ‘Aphorisms’ as “medieval war tunes fused with cartoon music”. Completing the programme is Shostakovich’s ninth symphony, an unusually playful piece for him – which was certainly not what the demanding Stalin expected and had hoped for.

Reduced prices for people under 26 or over 60. All can save £1 per ticket by booking online in advance.
