About the show

Part musical memoir. Part cabaret confessional. Part survival howl.
Ambitious Underachiever returns to London for a one-night performance in the intimate setting where it first began, a narrowboat theatre on Regent’s Canal.
The show has travelled through Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton and a UK tour, picking up shape, bite and clarity along the way. What remains is deliberately stripped back: one performer, a mic, backing tracks, and nowhere to hide.
Award-winning American vocalist and storyteller Mychelle Colleary blends smoky jazz, sharp humour and original material with reimagined classics (Strayhorn, Chaplin and others), building a piece that moves between cabaret, storytelling and something more structured underneath.
At its core, Ambitious Underachiever is about brain injury, broken systems, and the absurdity of being told you are fine when you are not. It is raw, wry and quietly defiant, resisting easy redemption arcs in favour of something more honest.
The canal boat setting places audience and performer in close proximity, creating an experience that is intimate, immediate and slightly unpredictable.
Darkly funny, emotionally precise, and grounded in lived experience, Ambitious Underachiever offers something that lingers, not because it resolves neatly, but because it doesn’t.
