To mark his 50th birthday, one of Ireland's most distinctive improvising pianists, Paul G. Smyth, returns to the Vortex for an evening of sets with old friends and close collaborators.

Described by The New York City Jazz Record as “a revelation”, the pianist Paul G. Smyth has released critically acclaimed duo albums with Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Chris Corsano, John Wiese and John Russell on his label Weekertoft; performed with Charles Gayle, Derek Bailey, Keiji Haino, Wadada Leo Smith and Okkyung Lee, and toured with large-scale instrumental psych-rockers The Jimmy Cake and synth trio Boys of Summer, creating a body of work that has led The Free Jazz Collective to call him “one of the great contemporary pianists”.

Benedict Taylor (viola) is a London based violist, specialising in contemporary music and improvisation. He performs and records throughout the UK, Europe and Asia as a soloist and ensemble performer with improvisation groups, new music ensembles, electroacoustic groups and full orchestras, in many of the world's leading festivals and venues.

John Edwards

John Edwards appearing at this event
An extremely creative jazz bassist and one of the most significant players of his generation. After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music. Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton. Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year.
