About the show
A fantastic double bill featuring two of the most innovative and most distinctive groups in UK creative music. Both have been touring debut albums this year and feature superb line-ups of heavy weight improvisers, in ensembles of extreme flexibility, musical courage and the widest of emotional palettes. Both books of music combine powerful freedom and exploration with memorable melodies, driving swing and emotional intensity and this evening's gig will feature some collaborative pieces mixing both ensembles. Not to be missed!
Featuring - Nick Malcolm

After living in Bath for the past few years Nick moved to London to do the postgraduate jazz course at Trinity. Now back in the area he is playing better than ever! Sighting his influences from a wide range of players such as Freddie Hubbard, Dave Douglas, Louis Armstrong, Miles, Winton Marsalis, Nick plays a whole range of styles from straight ahead to improve and in doing so has already made quite an impact on the music scene there. He has many projects ongoing such as the quintet Five Spot, a mixture of composed, grooves, free and changes featuring some of the South West’s top players such as Kevin Figes. Another band features Nick with Jake McMurchie and he has his own exciting Nick Malcolm Quartet which takes it’s inspiration from the “free Jazz” style.
Olie Brice

Olie Brice is a jazz and improv double bassist, based in London.
Will Glaser
Jason Yarde

Jason Yarde creates mind-blowing compositions by producing saxophone, voice and other sounds live on stage, then adding delays, harmonizers and tone crunchers through an arsenal of small stage pedals. Multi-layered, lyrical, abstract and rhythmical: experience the saxophone like you’ve never heard it before.
"His sax improvising has quietly blossomed to world class" - The Guardian
Jake McMurchie

Cambridge educated, Jake McMurchie has been an influential member of the thriving South West jazz scene for more than a decade. His distinctive sound, imagination and melodic drive have made him a key member of many of the most innovative and exciting bands to emerge from the Bristol area: What Four who won Birmingham Jazz?s new music award in 1998, thecontemporary big band Ultrasound and currently Get The Blessing, featuring Jim Barr and Clive Deamer of Portishead.
Alexander Hawkins
Alexander Hawkins is a musician 'unlike anything else in modern creative music' (Ni Kantu), whose recent work has been said to have reached a 'dazzling new apex' (Downbeat).
Although frequently heard leading his own Ensemble, with such groups as The Convergence Quartet and Decoy, or indeed as a sideman to the likes of Louis Moholo-Moholo, Joe McPhee, Mulatu Astatke and many others, he performs extremely rarely as a solo pianist (with the most recent instance being for broadcast on Italy's Rai Tre network).
Rachel Musson
Jawdropping sheets of sound from diminutive Musson on tenor sax.
