About the show
Pianist and improviser Kit Downes is playing again downstairs at the Vortex, as part of a series of improvised nights that have so far featured Tom Challenger, Sally O Reilly, Benedict Taylor, Tara Cunningham just to name a few. This time Kit is joined by the unique clarinetist Alex Ward and double bass legend John Edwards for a set of exploration and spontaneity.

Kit Downes
Kit Downes is one of the most highly regarded rising stars of the UK jazz scene, as the pianist in the band Empirical, composed of ex-Tomorrow's Warriors, and leader of the Fat Cat Organ Trio and Troyka. In 2008 he was awarded winner of the BBC Jazz Awards, in 2009 the Yamaha Jazz Scholarship Award and in 2010 he was one of PRS Foundation's Take Five Jazz Award winners. His 2009 album Golden, with the Kit Downes Trio, was shortlisted in 2010 for a Mercury Award and has won him great critical acclaim from the national press and Jazz reviewers.

John Edwards
An extremely creative jazz bassist and one of the most significant players of his generation. After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music. Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton. Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year.
