About the show

The Cosmo 2 Club invites to you an evening of pop, avant-folk balladry & rock 'n’ roll.

Morton Valence
We are delighted that class London outfit Morton Valence will be playing for us at the April Cosmo 2 Club. Based around the vocal paring of Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett and Irish chanteuse Anne Gilpin, Morton Valence take the classic duet, old-school ballad and avant-folk country song and feed them through their own unique filter, creating a sound and song-writing style that is very much their own. Loaded with life-affirming harmony and candid narratives, they have been captivating music lovers and pretty much anyone who happens to stumble into their orbit for some time now. Conjure up a vision of Nancy & Lee drifting down the River Thames on a dreamboat to the promised land, and you’ll be getting close. Current line-up also includes Shane Gilliver on bass and drummer Matt Donavan. Recently Morton Valence collaborated with BJ Cole as well as Stephen McCarthy of the Long Ryders/Dream Syndicate on their 2025 single release, ‘Hey Misty’, which was a favourite of Gideon Coe’s at BBC6 Music.

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood
House band Drew Morrison and the Darkwood’s central vision of a music illuminated by the guiding star genres of Country, Pop & Rock ‘N' Roll all tinged with wide open spaced Bob Nolanesque 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now. The Darkwood features Drew Morrison singing/guitar, George London bass/singing, Ian Gant on guitar and Nick Steyn on drums.

Morton Valence appearing at this event
Morton Valence have been ploughing their own genre-defying furrow for more years than they care to remember, producing 7 critically acclaimed albums along the way. Centred around the vocal pairing of Robert 'Hacker' Jessett and Anne Gilpin - 2 voices that couldn't be more different, yet more suited to each other at the same time. Jessett and Gilpin describe their music as 'urban country' and are cited on the BBC website as having recorded “the best ever single you’ve never heard of”. They were recently signed to 'Cow Pie' records and are currently collaborating with steel guitar legend BJ Cole on an 8th album.
