About the show
Slavic Voices London choir invites you into the glowing warmth of their programme inspired by Kudelitsa. Rooted in the Proto-Slavic “kodel’” (the raw flax or wool for spinning) Kudelitsa represents the ancient winter threshold where outdoor work paused and community life moved indoors. Women and young girls spent long winter evenings gathering to spin yarn, weave and embroider. This concert will recreate the intimate, firelit atmosphere of traditional spinning circles, where community gathered during dark winter nights to share heartfelt stories and songs.
The choir’s music spans a wide geographic and cultural territory stretching from the far corners of Siberia to the banks of the Black Sea. Slavic Voices perform in many languages: Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Belorussian, Bosnian and even Yiddish. The programme will weave together radiant folk song arrangements, luminous textures of sacred Orthodox pieces, velvety classics by Rachmaninov and Janáček with a thread of a few surprise solo performances.
Expect a whirlwind of high-energy sets, rich cultural storytelling and soul-stirring harmonies.
Stay warm and nourished during the interval, where refreshments will be on sale from the welcoming St. John the Baptist Church team.
